February's Interactive

from Moving Beyond Icebreakers

Group the Group

Goal: Surfacing Group Dynamics
Time: 5 -10 Minutes
Physical Contact: Yes
Number of participants: 10-100
Space: Open Floor

Instructions:

The object of this exercise is for people to get into groups of different sizes based on the number you call out. For example, if you call out the number “five”, everyone tries to get into a group of five. Then call out “three”, and have everyone get into a group of three.  Participants will get into groups by standing next to each other.  Those who are left out of a group should stand aside, until the next number is called. Continue calling out numbers in random order for five or six rounds. Remember to plan the numbers you will call out ahead of time. Choose numbers that is appropriate to your group size. Use numbers that will leave some people out as well as numbers that will work out evenly.

Processing:

This interactive can be used to look at people's ability to move through many different groups. Observe strategies people may use to get into a group as well as strategies they may use to cope with not being in a group. You will find that some people will be competitive and aggressive, while others may be passive and leave themselves out of a group. Ask participants about their strategy and what they felt during the exercise. This interactive provides insight into work styles and into behaviors within groups when there is stress and competition. It is also a great tool to use in exploring the issues of cliques and bullying.

If there is some discomfort that shows around hugging, explore that feeling with participants in a neutral, nonjudgmental way.
